Wicked Veracity Podcast Show Notes | Episode 3
Jan 15, 2021Sounds Like a Whisper
One of the things you will quickly learn about me is that I love music. All types of music. I hear songs in my head randomly and start singing whilst going about my day like I’m the star of a Disney movie or broadway musical. Not because I’m talented or anyone wants to hear me but because my internal world has a soundtrack and sometimes it needs to be shared with anyone who happens to be within listening range.
Why in the world am I telling you this? Well, there’s the main reason which I’ll get to momentarily and then there’s the bonus reason which I’ll give you now. Music is a powerful way to tap into your emotions and gain clarity not only on what you’re feeling but also what you’re thinking about. When a song grabs you by the throat and won’t let go, there’s a reason. Something in it is speaking to you and some part of you desperately wants to be heard. Listen to the song and then take time to listen to yourself.
Alright back to the main event. As I was thinking about how I wanted to really get this podcast started I had SO much mind drama about the narrative arc I wanted to present to the vast audience of people listening to the podcast with the hope of learning something new, being entertained on a long commute, taking a break from the background noise that makes up so much of life, or as a way to get through a workout and it was entirely overwhelming. So I put it off until the last possible moment like one does when indulging in overwhelm.
I woke up this morning and prepared to invoke the muse, the teller of stories, the giver of visions, the spark that illuminates the darkness and calls forth creativity. And then I heard the music. Tracy Chapman’s song, Talkin Bout a Revolution.
Of course, it made me think of current events and how all sides of the political spectrum feel they’re personally being called to take a stand in a revolution but it was the line - sounds like a whisper - that’s been on a loop in my inner concert hall.
It made me realize that what I really want is to revolutionize the way people think. The way they think about themselves, their friends, their families, history, politics, the world, and everything in between - and all of that starts with a whisper.
Everything any one of us believes began with a thought and every revolution began with the whisper that perhaps that thought wasn’t what we wanted to believe anymore.
Take a minute to really think about that.
The earth was flat, we couldn’t sail ships under water or through space, disease could only be cured with leeches and the Earth was the center of the universe. Everything that we have ever believed to be irrefutable truth eventually gets questioned, revised, rebranded, and believed in whole heartedly until it isn’t. Until there is a whisper, the wheel turns; the belief, limitation, scientific fact, or moral certainty is questioned and the cycle repeats.
But this isn’t just true on the grand stages of scientific, religious, and socio-political revolutions.
It’s also true for us as individuals. You were a child who expected to be taken care of until you began to think like an adult and care for others.
You were deeply, madly, wildly in love with that person until you were utterly shattered from the heartbreak of losing them and eventually mildly nostalgic as they became a footnote in the story of your life.
Those are the whispers we don’t even really notice. To be honest, most of us have the volume turned way down on our own whispers until they are little more than the background music we ignore as we watch the reality show that is our life.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
You can learn to pay attention to your thoughts until you are able to hear those whispers begging to become a revolution within you.
You’re not limited by who you’ve been, what you’ve done, or anything else in your past. If you’re willing to really listen to the little whispers within you, you can start a personal revolution and become, achieve, or do anything you truly want. Of course, that means knowing what you truly want but that is a conversation for another time.
So tell me...
What’s whispering inside of you today? Who do you want to be? What do you want to create? What goal would you set and what would you do if you truly believed you had the power to succeed at anything you wanted?? Now tell me all the reasons you can’t have it so we can get started on the revolution.
Spend time with these questions and see what comes up. If you’re feeling frisky, hit me up on Instagram and share your answers with me.
Until next time, my wish is for you to have as much faith in yourself as I have in you to start your own revolution.
